What should I expect? Any manhattan or experience would be appreciated! Prefaced that I am a straight white guy: Lived in Manhattan for 4 years, it is a mix of college and middle class military, not much else. It is a very white, very conservative area, however military tend to be more accepting full disclosure, I was Army for 4 years of LGBT than the college kids there.

There were a number of gay officers and enlisted, and even before DADT was repealed it wasn't really a secret. Never heard any anti-gay sentiment amongst the club peoples, and discrimination is now a career ending offense. If you haven't been around military bases, its hard to describe the experience.

Officers and senior NCOs tend to be very tolerant and accepting; a good friend of mine was hilariously trying to hide his homosexuality all the time during DADT I'm sure he didn't find it funny, since it was a career ender at the time if he was 'officially' made but we all knew and I don't ever recall it being a social hindrance.

The state and KSU are a bit of a different story. Very much an agricultural area and the university fits with that.

Very strong rural, conservative values, and everything that goes with it. Thanks - not what I expected. I'm not a student, so that's not my primary concern although I would have thought that young people are more progressive ; I was wondering more about restaurants, supermarkets, etc. Originally Posted by Fallada.

Thank you for these responses! I do want to tip my hat to the men and women in uniform - having served my time as a draftee in Europe I also don't understand why this country refuses to share the burden of defense. I'm glad to hear that the military has made great strides in accepting and welcoming the natural demographical diversity of the larger population!
